GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University football team forced seven turnovers and gained nearly 500 yards on their way to a 33-21 victory over Colorado Mesa University Saturday afternoon at Stocker Stadium in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
WNMU (3-2, 2-1 RMAC) came away with an early turnover on the second play from scrimmage, as a fumble was recovered by the Mustangs at the Mavericks' 36.
The Mustangs then moved down the field on eight plays, with the big play being a 13-yard pass from
David Ingram (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge HS) to
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) on third-and-six. Later,
Daveon Barner (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) found the end zone on a one-yard run and after the point after failed, WNMU held a 6-0 lead under five minutes in.
CMU (1-4, 0-3 RMAC) answered with a seven-play, 79-yard drive, capped by a 17-yard touchdown run and after the point after try was good, the Mavs took the lead, 7-6.
The Mavericks continued with the momentum, as the Mustangs turned the ball over on their next possession, giving CMU the ball just across midfield.
CMU would capitalize on a pair of WNMU penalties to find the end zone again, this time on a three-yard rush to move the lead to 14-6 after the extra point.
WNMU came up with some trickery later on near the end of the first quarter, with the score still 14-6,
Shamone Fletcher (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa HS) took the pass from Ingram and threw it down field to an open Pompey who went in for the score to complete the 61-yard pitch-and-catch.
Kameron Drawhorn (San Diego, CA/Fallbrook HS) added the extra point, leaving the Mustangs down by just one, 14-13.
Another CMU turnover would help the Mustangs to another touchdown, as a quarterback sack by
Dashaun Briggs (AZ/) caused a fumble that was recovered by
Zachary Dembrowski (Lake Elsinore/Elsinore HS) at the Mavs 18.
Three plays later, Ingram hit
Markis Sumpter (Oceanside, CA/Fallbrook High School) for a 15-yard touchdown on third-and-seven to push WNMU back in front, 20-14, as Drawhorn nailed the extra point.
It would remain that way into halftime and the Mavericks would answer back again early in the third quarter following a three-and-out by the Mustangs, CMU would begin their drive at their 32 following a seven yard punt return.
Four plays later, a 57-yard touchdown pass had CMU back in front following the extra point to give the Mavs a 21-20 lead with over 12 minutes to go in the third quarter.
The Mustangs would go-ahead for good on a drive late in the third quarter that began at the WNMU 32.
Ingram started the drive with a 16-yard hookup with Pompey to move the ball near midfield.
After a pair of plays only gained one yard, on third-and nine, Ingram found Sumpter for 33 yards and a first down all the way down to the Mavericks 18.
Tyler Jackson (San Diego, CA/Ramona HS) took the next play down to the 15 on a three yard run and after Ingram hit
Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX/Anthony HS) for a six yard play, Jackson moved the chains again with a two yard run down to the seven.
Ingram then found pay dirt, as he threw the ball into the end zone finding
Koa Pahia (Hauula, HI/Kahuku HS) for the touchdown. The extra point was blocked leaving WNMU ahead 26-21 near the end of the third quarter.
The teams would trade possessions before WNMU put the game out of reach with a drive beginning with just over ten minutes to play in the contest.
After a punt pinned the Mustangs all the way back to their two,
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) came through with a huge run of 68 yards on second-and-ten all the way down to the CMU 18. Macias ended up fumbling on the end of the run, but Sumpter came up with the big recovery to keep the drive alive.
Macias would end up concluding the drive, as after an Ingram run moved the ball to the 11, Macias took it in the rest of the way for the touchdown and after the extra point, WNMU held a 33-21 lead with just under nine minutes to play.
The Mustang defense then helped seal the victory, as they held CMU to a turnover on downs on the ensuing drive.
Macias led the WNMU ground attack, chewing up 153 yards on 16 attempts, while finding the end zone once.
Ingram threw the ball 44 times, completing 27 for 234 yards and two touchdowns.
Sumpter and Pompey were the recipients of most of Ingram's passes, with Sumpter grabbing eight for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Pompey had six grabs for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Jacob Cross (Bakersfield, CA/Centennial HS), Briggs and
Chris Sneed (Marshall, TX/Marshall HS) all had ten tackles apiece to power the defense.
WNMU will return home this coming Saturday when they host Western State for Homecoming with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
