The Mustangs could not make it two in a row Saturday night at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. With WNMU down by seven, 66-59, with five minutes left in the game, the Cowgirls finished with a 19-8 run to take the victory, 85-67.
The Mustangs are now 1-16 on the season and 1-12 in the RMAC. Highlands improves to 8-12 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
Jaleesa Russell (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) led all scorers with 20 points. She shot .700 from the field (7-10) and got five points from the free throw line.
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ, Highland High School, Idaho State University) recorded 16 points. Twelve of those points were from the money ball.
Larissa Loera (Mira Loma, CA, Jurupa Valley High School) made quick work of her 14 minutes of play off the bench. She notched 11 points, all coming in the second half, after hitting 4 of 5 shots from the floor. Her 11 were the only bench points for WNMU. Highlands had 31 points from their reserves.
Highlands' China Smith recorded the game's only double-double after her 13 points and 11 rebounds. Whitley Coca had 15 points and seven assists.
WNMU had a five-point advantage, 11-6, five minutes into the game, but Highlands turned things up a notch and went on an 18-1 run over the next five minutes. The Cowgirls never gave up the lead from that point. The host was up, 45-28, at half. The lead then swelled to as many as 22 in the second half.
