A well-rested Mustang women's basketball team hoped the start of 2011 would be more successful than the second half of 2010 as the Mustangs were still in search of their first win on the season, but it did not turn out that way. Colorado Christian rang in a new year with a win over WNMU, 95-75.
The Cougars built an eight-point lead to start the contest, but WNMU went on a 7-2 run, all by freshman
Kim Clark (Santee, CA, West Hills High School), that had the score tied with 11 minutes to play before the break. CCU regained control with a little run of their own, though, rattling off six unanswered points to put the Cougars up, 28-22.
Hot CCU shooting in the closing minutes of the first half gave the Cougars a 53-37 lead at the half.
The hot shooing carried over to the second half when the CCU lead stretched to as many as 27, allowing them to post a perfect record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (6-0).
Coming off the bench and playing 28 minutes, WNMU's Clark finished with 17 points, her best so far this season. Leading all scorers, though, was
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ, Highland High School, Idaho State University) with 22.
Jaleesa Russell (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) added 17 points after fouling out after 19 minutes of play.
Kelsie Hert led all CCU scorers with 18 points after connecting on eight shots from the field.
