It is early in the season, but the Mustangs' opponents have not figured out how to stop outside hitters
Angelina Pulu (Long Beach, CA, Robert A. Millikan High School) and
Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School). The duo combined for 37 of the team's 55 kills in the 3-1 victory (26-24, 21-25, 25-13, 25-20) over St. Martin's University Friday afternoon.
Pulu and Murdock were also defensive demons in the victory, combining for 27 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs were huge threats behind the service line. WNMU produced 14 aces compared to St. Martin's four. However, serving tough often times brings errors. The Mustangs posted 13 service errors in the four sets. The Saints only had six errors.
Freshman
Alyssa Meihack (Fallon, NV, Churchill County High School) handled the pressure once again of being a leader on the court. She handed out 43 assists in the setter position while coming up with 10 digs.
In set one, the Mustangs were up 23-17 when the Saints tied things up at 24. Murdock and Meihack sealed the victory with a kill and ace respectively.
The Mustangs were then down early in set two, 8-3, when the head coach
Jim Callender was forced to call a time out. The timeout forced a Saints' error, but the Mustangs could not capitalize and shorten the scoring gap. The Saints walked away with set two, 25-21, as WNMU hitting only .100.
The hitting woes moved over to St. Martin's side of the court in set three. They posted six kills and eight errors on 36 attempts for a negative hitting percentage. The Mustangs didn't hit very well either (.161) but still walked away with the easy 25-13 victory.
The hitting finally balanced out in set four. Both teams produced few errors. WNMU hit .351, and St. Martin's posted a spectacular .476. With the great hitting, serving became the key. The Mustangs smashed five aces in the 25-20 victory.
