Byrne To Transfer From New Mexico State

Head softball coach Scott Woodard announced Tuesday that pitcher Sarah Byrne will transfer to WNMU after two seasons with the Aggies at New Mexico State University.

Woodard has had his eyes on Byrne since she was in high school. “I wanted her to play for us two years ago when I saw her and Kaitlynn (Barnes) together. I am really excited to have them on the same field the next two years,” says Woodard. “She was one of Arizona's best players three years ago and was part of a high school national championship team. She swings the bat extremely well…. and is a blue collar player that will help continue to change the mind set of players in this program.”

As a freshman at Cactus High School, Byrne was selected to the All-Region First Team as a first baseman. In the box, she batted .357 and had 30 hits along with 17 RBIs. Defensively, Byrne was the starting pitcher in seven games, facing 213 batters with an ERA of 0.79.

Byrne collected All-Region Second Team and All-State Honorable Mention awards her second year of play. She had a batting average of .400 with 44 hits, while driving in 26 runs. In the circle, Byrne posted a 0.00 ERA in her five starts where she faced 125 batters, helping lead her team to a state and national championship

As a junior, Byrne pitched her way to a fifth place state finish while earning All-Region and All-State Honorable Mention honors. She rounded out her interscholastic career with All-Region First Team and All-State Second Team awards.

Sitting out last year at New Mexico State, Byrnes pitched in seven games this past season and recorded a 1-1 record.

Byrnes plans to get her public administration degree and then go on to graduate school to become a secondary educational teacher.
