Down by 14 in the first half, 41-27, the Mustangs battled back to force overtime against the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves. Scoring was scare in overtime for WNMU. The Pack went on a 10-0 run to close the game, 88-78. This was the Mustangs' sixth loss in a row and are now 4-14 overall (4-8 RMAC).
The ThunderWolves improve to 14-7 on the season and 10-3 in conference play.
Western New Mexico trailed much of the first half despite playing a full court press. The high intensity press in the second half, however, slowed the Pack down. The Mustangs annoyed the ThunderWolves into several mistakes and missed shots, and Western New Mexico tied the game at the close of regulation on a layup by
Audra Major (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School, Midland Community College), sending the game into an extra period tied at 73.
Though the press was effective in the second stanza, it didn't help WNMU in overtime. Pueblo shot 57.1 percent in overtime while the Mustangs were 0 for 6 from the floor. WNMU's only points in the extra five were five freebies off of Pueblo fouls.
Major finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. She was followed by
Shatwa Morris (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) who had 19 points. Morris also snatched four steals.
Pueblo's Rachel Espinoza finished the game with 20 points, six assists, and five steals while posting her 1,000th career point.
