WNMU Falls in Home Closer

Junior Jeron McIntosh
It took two overtimes, 15 ties, and 11 lead changes to determine a winner Saturday night. The Mustangs had the first overtime buzzer beater to force a second overtime. It was CSU-Pueblo, though, who nailed the second overtime shot and drew the foul with 0.3 left on the clock. With Pueblo on the line, the ball did not want to fall in, but it did. CSU-Pueblo won, 91-90. WNMU is now 10-14 overall and 9-8 in the RMAC. Pueblo improves to 15-9 overall and 10-7 in conference play.

The game was nearly settled after regulation. With just three seconds left and the score knotted at 66, WNMU slipped up and fouled Roman Van Allen, sending him to the line for a one-and-one. He missed it and saw the ball trickle out of bounds to force overtime.

The Mustangs went on a 5-0 run to open up the first round of overtime, but that lead quickly went away after back to back threes by the ThunderWolves. With the clock winding down and WNMU down, 77-76, WNMU had a chance to earn victory with a last basket opportunity. It was just like the women's game a few hours earlier though. A poor inbounds pass gave the ball to Pueblo and forced WNMU to foul with five seconds left, sending the ThunderWolves to the line for a double bonus.

Like regulation, Van Allen missed his first free throw. He recovered, however, and sunk the second to go up two. The Mustangs needed to hustle. TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) handed the ball to Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School), who took the ball the length of the floor and drained the lay-up to force overtime number two.

In the second round of bonus basketball, Pueblo led by four, 86-82, with 1:43 remaining. The Mustangs kicked it into high gear and put together a 7-0 run that ended with a three by Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) with 28 seconds remaining. WNMU was up, 89-86. Pueblo responded with a Van Allen jumper, bringing the ThunderWolves to within one. WNMU's Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM, Las Cruces High School) was immediately fouled. He went 1 for 2 from the line, and Pueblo got the ball with eight seconds remaining.

Van Allen took charge again, driving the lane for a layup and drawing a foul in the process. Tied at 90 with 0.3 seconds on the clock, this time Van Allen's free throw fell to give the ThunderWolves the 91-90 victory.

McIntosh finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College)added 15 off the bench. Eleven of those came in the first half. Riley and Carter both pitched in with 14 apiece.

Van Allen netted 19 points.
