Western New Mexico's women's basketball continued their strong play Saturday with an impressive 84-68 win over visiting Mesa State in RMAC action. The tally was the Stangs largest margin of victory this season in their six wins and ran their conference record to 6-9. Mesa State slipped to 8-14 (5-10 RMAC).
The Mustangs rode a quick start and a solid 50-point first half to the victory before slowing down to just 34 points in the second stanza. They took a 13-point advantage to the locker room after smoking the basket, hitting just almost 50 percent from the floor. The locals cooled off a bit in the second half, but shot a very respectable 44 percent for the game and .765 from the free throw line.
WNMU out-rebounded the Mavericks, 36-32, in the game and forced the visitors into 24 turnovers while giving up the ball just 15 times.
Krystal Davis (Fort Worth, TX, North Crowley High School) led the way for WNMU with 22 points but got big-time help from her teammates.
Lonnie Sanchez (Scottsdale, AZ, St. Mary's High School) popped in 18 points while
Dana Alexander (Fort Worth, TX, Arlington Heights High School) scored 17, and
Audra Major (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School) connected for 16 points on the night. Major also pulled eight rebounds.
Mesa State's Alaina Brennan and Meagan Selvidge led the Mavs with 21 and 20 points respectively.
The Mustangs have their final home stand of the season next weekend as they host New Mexico Highlands on Thursday and CSU-Pueblo on Saturday. The team closes out the regular season with a road trip to Adams State and Fort Lewis on February 25th and 28th.
