Metro Races Past Mustangs

The Mustangs produced much better numbers in the turnover category Saturday night against Metro State, committing only 13, but WNMU struggled from the floor. WNMU's first field goal of the game came nearly nine minutes into the game. It forced the Mustangs to play catch-up. The Roadrunners raced past the Mustangs, 56-36.

WNMU is still in search of their first win (0-5 overall, 0-2 RMAC) while Metro State remains undefeated (6-0 overall, 2-0 RMAC).

WNMU played a much better second half than the first, being outscored by just one point, 25-24, but the first half was all Metro with the Roadrunners taking a 31-12 lead into the locker room. The Mustangs hit a dismal 4 of 23 attempts in the first stanza. Metro went 12 of 35 during the same period.

Overall, WNMU shot only .196 on the night and were 0 for 19 from three-point land. Metro, on the other hand, shot .351 from the floor. Metro also had the upper hand in rebounds (56-31). WNMU allowed Metro to snag 21 offensive boards, producing 16 second chance points. 

WNMU's Shatwa Morris (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) led all scorers with 15 points after nailing 7 of 9 free throws. She also tacked on three assists, three rebounds, and three steals.

For the Roadrunners, Emily Wood recorded 14 points with Cassondra Bratton and Jasmine Cervantes each chipping in 10. Tawny Drexler and Kristin Valencia had double figure boards with 11 and 10 grabs respectively.

The Mustangs hit the road next weekend to Colorado's Western Slope next weekend for meetings with Mesa State and Western State.
