Western New Mexico's women's basketball team opened up RMAC play with an ice cold shooting performance and a 69-57 loss to Regis Friday night on Drag's Court. A boisterous crowd and a fierce defense that forced the Rangers to 35 turnovers couldn't overcome the glass lid that sat on the Mustangs' basket as WNMU fell to 0-4 (0-1 RMAC) on the season. Regis improved to 2-2 (1-0 RMAC).
Halftime saw both teams tied at 27, but most of that effort for WNMU was due to a perfect 10 for 10 performance at the charity stripe. The Rangers kept WNMU off the line in the second half, for the most part, and their 29 percent field goal did them in for the rest of the game.
Regis cleared 47 rebounds -- 16 more than their hosts.
WNMU was led by
Shatwa Morris' (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) 20 points but also got double figures from
Jaleesa Russell (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) (16) and
Christa Kennedy (Soldatna, AK, Soldatna High School) (11).
Regis was led by Kari Ameling's 22-point night.
