Sun Bowl Not So Sunny For Mustangs

Junior TJ Riley
The University of Texas – El Paso was never truly threatened by the Western New Mexico Mustangs Tuesday night in the restructured Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational. The Miners led from the starting gate with a quick layup off the opening tipoff. By halftime, the lead stretched to 15 and remained in double figures the rest of the game. UTEP topped WNMU, 87-58.

WNMU falls to 3-8 overall while UTEP improves to 10-3. The Mustangs continue their play in the invitational tomorrow night when they take on Sam Houston State University at 5:00 p.m.

TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) finished the night with 15 points after hitting 6 of 14 shots from the floor. Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College) followed with 13 points. He also pitched in with seven rebounds. Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ, Basha High School) led in the boards category however. He posted eight rebounds in his 16 minutes of play.

In foul trouble much of the game, last week's RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School), had nine points and five rebounds in his 21 minutes.

WNMU shot only .328 from the floor (21-64). They were only slightly better from the free throw line. The purple and gold shot a poor .391 from the stripe, hitting a meager 9 of 23.

Thirteen players saw playing time on the UTEP roster. Leading all scorers and rebounders was John Bohannon with 20 points and 14 rebounds. He did much of his damage in the paint as the Miners outscored the Mustangs 46-16 down below.
