Cal State San Bernardino's Eisha Sheppard scored 14 points and Sabrina Gonzalez added 12 to lead the Coyotes to a convincing 78-50 victory over Western New Mexico on the final day of the UC San Diego Women's Basketball Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday evening at RIMAC Arena in San Diego.
The Coyotes improve to 3-0 overall in 2010 after winning both of their games this weekend. CSUSB also defeated Notre Dame de Namur in the tournament opener on Friday. Western New Mexico, which also lost to host UCSD on Friday, falls to 0-3 overall.
San Bernardino held a 42-19 halftime advantage and never looked back, leading by as many as 42 points at 67-25 with 7:24 remaining in the second half. CSUSB shot .516 in the first half to pull away and finished at .475 for the game. The Coyotes outscored the Mustangs 40-20 in the paint and scored 36 points on 33 WNMU turnovers.
Western New Mexico shot just .250 in the opening period and finished at a .275 clip for the game.
Shatwa Morris (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) put in a game-high 15 points to lead WNMU, finishing 3 of 6 from the field and 9 of 10 at the free throw line.
Jaleesa Russell (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) added 11 points and four boards.
Sheppard scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half, converting 6 of 11 shots from the field. She also finished with seven rebounds and five assists.
