Carter's First Double-Double Not Enough

Sophomore Chad Carter
Chad Carter's (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) first double-double of the season (17 points, 10 rebounds) could not lift the Mustangs to their first win of the season (0-3) Sunday night at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The Vulcans topped WNMU, 75-67. WNMU hopes to get revenge after 24 hours of rest. They will then return to the mainland on Wednesday.

For Hilo, Zach Wilde scored a career-high 26 points and pulled in nine rebounds.

The Mustangs hit three 3-pointers and three quick jumpers to get off to a fast start and go ahead by five, 16-11, after six minutes of play. The purple and gold saw the six-point lead two other times in the first half, but the Vulcans always hung around. The hosts finally put together a 9-2 run at the 3-minute mark to take the lead for good.

As a squad, the Mustangs only shot .310 from the floor and hit 6 of 24 shots from the arc. Three of those threes were in the first six minutes.

TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) recorded 15 points and five rebounds, all of the offensive end. Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM, Las Cruces High School) chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Vulcans were .446 from the field and .222 from 3-point range.
