Silverswords Top Mustangs 81-70

Senior Jeron McIntosh
The Mustangs were within two at halftime, 37-35, but cold Mustang shooting in the second half allowed Chaminade University to run away with the victory, 81-70.

WNMU shot .481 from the floor in the first half and hit a dry spell in the second with only .273. The Mustangs, however, improved dramatically over last year at the free throw line. In the loss, the purple and gold were 20 for 23 from the stripe (.870). Last season the team only saw .681 of their freebies go in.

Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) led WNMU with 18 points and six rebounds. TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) followed with 16 points. Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) and Andy Sohlich (Battle Creek, MI, St. Phillip Catholic Central High School, Western Texas Community College; Eldon Academy Prep) both had 14.

For Chaminade, Steven Bennett had 24 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Mamadou Diarra had 22 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

WNMU saw their only lead of the night after the very first basket by Riley. Chaminade followed it up with a shot for downtown 10 seconds later to kick start a 13-2 run. After that run, the Mustangs put together their own rally to come within one again, but then the Silversword lead stretched for a second time.

The Mustangs got within one point one final time in the closing seconds of the first half. After the intermission, the second half WNMU shooting woes flooded the gates. The Silverswords stretched the lead to 17 at one point and finally settled on the 11-point victory.
