Despite the Western State Mountaineers being winless in the conference so far this season, the WNMU Mustangs never assumed it would be an easy “W” as the Mountaineers won the last three contests against the Mustangs. Tied at 72 with 5:52 left to play, the Mountaineers went on a 19-5 run over the next 4:35 to head towards their first RMAC win. Western State won the heated contest, 94-82.
WNMU's
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) recorded 19 points in the first half but then was shut down in the second to finish with 24 points.
Eli Crevelone (Tucson, AZ, Canyon Del Oro High School) netted 17 points. Fifteen of those points came from beyond the arc. Coming off the bench,
Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) pitched in with 12 points and five assists.
The Mustangs were outshot (47.7-40.8 percent) and out-rebounded (52-32) by the Mountaineers. Western State tallied 16 second chance points.
WNMU had an 11-point advantage with 6:53 left in the first but quickly saw that lead dwindle to nothing by the time zeros showed on the clock. The teams were knotted at 41 walking into the locker room.
Right after intermission, Western State jumped ahead by as many as six a couple times in the first 10 minutes, but the Mustangs clawed their way each time.
With 5:52 left, the fans saw their eighth tie of the game. The tie was quickly wiped away with three straight threes by the Mountaineers. Western State continued to drain their shots and seal the double-digit victory.
