Mountaineers Win Western Battle

Senior Krystal Davis
WNMU's Krystal Davis (Fort Worth, TX, North Crowley High School, South Plains Junior College) scored 20 points in the first half against Western State Saturday night. It didn't match the Mountaineer's Amber Murray's 21 points in the second half however. Western State defeated WNMU, 89-64.

Western State is now 8-11 overall and 6-5 in the RMAC. The Mustangs remain with four conference wins (4-13 overall, 4-7 RMAC) on the season.

The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Mustangs, 49-30, and collected 18 offensive boards. They also outshot WNMU, 48.3 to 36.2 percent.

Davis finished the night with 27 points and five rebounds. She went 4 for 6 from the three-point line and a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw stripe.

Three Mustangs fouled out of the game, including Dana Alexander (Fort Worth, TX, Arlington Heights High School, Kilgore College; East Texas Baptist University) who was second on the team in scoring with 11.

Western State's Murray led all scorers with 32 points.

The Mustangs never led in the game. Western State had a 15- point advantage, 31-16, with 6:50 left in the first half, but WNMU went on a 16-5 run to conclude the half. The Mustangs walked into the locker room down by just five.

The Mountaineers scored the first six points of the second half to gain a double digit lead again and keep the momentum on their side. The Mountaineer lead sprung to as many as 29 points after Shatwa Morris (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) committed her fifth foul of the game with 2:49 left on the clock.
