Mesa State Remains Undefeated in Conference Action

Sophomore Eli Crevelone
The Mesa State Mavericks proved why they are ranked No. 14 in the country and undefeated in the RMAC. They were victorious over the Mustangs, 76-62. WNMU drops to 7-10 overall and 6-4 in conference action.

Mesa State improves to an impressive 17-1 overall and 11-0 in the RMAC.

Sophomore Stefan Mirabal (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) finished with 14 points. Eli Crevelone (Tucson, AZ, Canyon Del Oro High School) followed with 13 points.

Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) and Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College) were the leading board grabbers for the Mustangs with eight and seven rebounds respectively.

Mesa State's Justin Ashbaugh set a school record with 20 rebounds in a game. He added 16 points and six assists. Mike Dominguez led all scorers with 21 points.

The Mustangs had the one-point advantage, 18-17, with 10:24 left in the first half before the Mavericks went on a 10-3 run over the next seven minutes to jump ahead by six.

Crevelone cut the lead to two with just under two minutes to play in the first when he hit one of his three three-pointers of the night. The Mustangs remained silent after that while the Mavericks added two free throws, a three, and a layup before heading into the locker room. The Mavericks were up, 35-26.

Just like the first half, the Mustangs cut the lead to one basket midway through the second stanza, but only two Mirabal baskets and two Crevelone free throws in the final five minutes allowed Mesa State to tack on 13 points and get the win.
