The Adams State Grizzlies had very little trouble with the WNMU Mustangs Saturday night in Silver City. The Grizzlies dominated in nearly every category, including a 42-8 points in the paint margin, to take the victory, 78-48.
Adams State's improved to 13-3 overall and to 7-2 in RMAC play. The Mustangs fell to 4-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
The Mustangs played catch-up the entire game as they shot only 27.6 percent (8-29) in the first half and then a miserable 15.4 percent (4-26) in the second stanza. The Grizzlies shot a season-best 56.0 percent (28-50) overall from the field and 84.6 percent (22-26) from the free throw line.
The Mustangs were also on the losing ending in the rebounding category. Adams State had the big 45-25 rebounding advantage.
The Mustangs received 12 points from
Ashley Vigil (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School), who tallied nine from beyond the arc, and another 11 from
Audra Major (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School, Midland Community College).
The Grizzlies broke the game open with a 10-0 run in the first half as they jumped out to a 21-7 lead nearly nine minutes in. The double digit margin held at the break with the Grizzlies ahead 39-27.
The Mustangs struggled to score in the second half. The Grizzlies found little problem and outscored WNMU, 39-21, in the final 20 minutes and held them to just two inside points.
