Mustangs Pound Cowgirls In Three Sets

The Mustangs snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday night. They easily handled New Mexico Highlands University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-14), and started their conference schedule on the right foot. The Mustangs are now 3-6 overall and 1-0 in RMAC play.

WNMU committed only five errors in the three sets. Six Mustang players hit better than .375, much better than their .149 season average so far this season. Junior Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) led the way as she smashed ten kills on 17 attempts. She was followed by freshmen Ziona Verhulsdonk (Kailua, HI, Hawaii Preparatory Academy) and Christine Pina (Glendora, CA, Glendora High School) who combined for 13 kills. Neither newcomer committed a hitting error. Verhulsdonk also contributed four aces to lead the team to the victory.

With 21 assists, WNMU's Ellen East (Pomerene, AZ, Benson High School, Yavapai Community College) led all players in the setting category.

The Mustang defense was extremely effective against the Cowgirls. Marilee Frost (Long Beach, CA, Robert A. Millikan High School) and company limited Highlands to just 19 kills in the match. No hitter from the Cowgirls recorded more than four kills on the night. Linda Stevens registered the best Highland numbers of the night with 12 assists and four digs.
