Mustang Volleyball Drops Two

The Mustang volleyball team struggled at the Abilene Christian Volleyball Classic this weekend. The team went 0-4, dropping two matches today to Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian. 

In the first match of the day, WNMU dropped the first three sets to Incarnate Word, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17. The Mustangs had 24 attacking errors compared to Incarnate's 14. Ziona Verhulsdonk (Kailua, HI, Hawaii Preparatory Academy) led the team in kills with 10, and Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) had nine. Ellen East (Pomerene, AZ, Benson High School, Yavapai Community College) recorded 23 assists, and Marilee Frost (Long Beach, CA, Robert A. Millikan High School) had 15 digs. 

The team struggled in the second set as Incarnate Word went on a seven to two run; however, in the third set, the Mustangs started the game off well collected seven points to their two but still experienced the lost. 

The second match of the day also came as an upset to WNMU. They lost to Abilene Christian, 25-12, 25-18, 25-10. The Mustangs had 19 kills compared to Abilene's 39 and suffered 21 attacking errors. Christine Pina (Glendora, CA, Glendora High School) collected five kills in the match. East had 11 assists, and Frost had 12 digs. 

Within the two games, WNMU recorded 50 kills but had 45 errors. Against their two opponents, WNMU posted one ace compared to Incarnate and Abilene's 16. The Mustangs also had 16 serving errors compared to only one by the other two schools. 

WNMU volleyball looks to get back on top this Tuesday in Las Vegas, New Mexico, where they will play New Mexico Highlands at 7:00 p.m.
