Calling All Softball Alumni

Head softball coach Scott Woodard and his assistants, Angela Slaugh and Meredith Drahota, invite all former WNMU softball players to the first annual WNMU Softball Alumni Weekend held on September 26 and 27. WNMU boasts a successful softball history, starting with the 1997 inaugural team. Share your stories with the current players of the blood, sweat, tears, and laughs that went into putting this program on the map.

Reconnect with former softball teammates and coaches at a barbeque held at the softball field following the Mustang home football game on Saturday, September 26 versus Western State College. Kickoff for the football game is set for 1:00 p.m.

Sunday begins with a breakfast social at the softball field at 10:00 a.m. Former players are then welcome to watch or participate in the main event: the 1997-2009 Alumni Team vs. the 2009-2010 Softball Team. The first pitch will be thrown at 11:00 a.m. Just prior to the game, three past softball All-Americans will be honored (Holly Justice, P, 2000, 2001; Shellie Broyles, SS, 2003; and Angela Slaugh, P, 2004). Fans who supported the teams along the way, including no. 1 fans Bill and Patsy Miller, will also receive recognition.

The softball program competed in the PacWest Conference from 1997 to 2005, winning three conference championships. In the spring of 2004, the Mustangs visited the NCAA Division II College World Series held in Orlando, Florida and finished fifth in the nation. The Mustangs then joined the Heartland Conference for one season in 2005 where they finished second in the conference tournament. In 2006, the Mustangs were welcomed into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. That first year the team won the conference tournament.

The past two season have been rebuilding years for the Mustangs on the softball field, but this year the team looks to redefine themselves with returners Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA/La Costa Canyon High School), who received Second team All-American and finished the season hitting .480 with 16 homeruns, and Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ/Benson High School), who batted .309.

Senior Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ/Marana High School) also returns after a stellar junior year with 24 stolen bases and a .319 batting average. Now sophomore Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley High School) had an outstanding rookie year last year, hitting an impressive .397 with eight homeruns.
