Mustangs Have a Great Day in the Sun

Freshman Kaitlynn Barnes
The Mustangs have finally found their winning ways once again. On Sunday, the Mustangs earned two wins over the University of Nebraska – Kearney Lopers, 10-9 and 16-5. WNMU improves to 7-17 overall 5-11 in RMAC play.

In a game riddled with errors by both teams, the Mustangs edged past the Lopers in the fifth inning. The Lopers held an 8-6 advantage, but the Mustangs loaded the bases with a Courtney Reyes (Alamogordo, NM, Alamogordo High School) single to left field and two straight walks. Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) was up to bat next and drew the third straight walk to get an easy RBI. Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA/La Costa Canyon High School) then reached first base after a Loper error. The error brought in two more runs. The Mustangs were ahead, 9-8.

WNMU tacked on an additional run in the sixth. The Lopers came close in the seventh inning as an error led to a double to centerfield to score one run. The one run was not enough to force the game to extra innings.

Pitcher Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM, St. Pius X High School) faced 31 batters in her seven innings pitched. She struck out five and walked only two. Garcia, for the first time this season, saw time in the batter's box. On her first at bat in the bottom of the second, she connected for a two-run homer over left field.

Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) also hit a two-run homerun in the game. Barr and Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado High School, Mesa Community College) finished game one with two hits apiece.

Game two was nearly perfect for the Mustangs offensively. Ahead 4-3, WNMU's Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) started the bottom of the third inning with a homerun over the centerfield fence. Three straight singles with no one out forced a Loper pitching change. The Mustangs took full advantage. Barnes nailed a grand slam. The Mustangs were ahead, 9-3.

The Mustangs then tacked on four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to end the game in just five innings.

WNMU recorded 15 hits. Smith went a perfect 4-for-4, while Barr and Bisgard each had three hits. Bisgard and Barnes combined for 10 of the Mustangs' 15 runs batted in.

Sarah Almanza (El Paso, TX, JM Hank High School, Ranger Junior College) recorded her first win in the pitching circle.
