The women's basketball team was down one at half (28-27), but Adams State's Vera Jo Bustos netted 22 second half points to run away with the win, 67-61, and clinch an RMAC Shootout Tournament playoff spot. The Mustangs conclude their season with an 8-19 overall record.
The Mustangs were on fire early as they took a 17-7 lead over the Grizzlies with 12 minutes left in the first half. Adams State then got back into the game with a 16-0 run over the next seven minutes.
Bustos then took over in the second half. Bustos drained a three with 5:12 left to play to give Adams State their biggest lead of the game (13). The Mustangs hung in there, though.
Krystal Davis (Fort Worth, TX, North Crowley High School, South Plains Junior College) posted ten of her 16 total points in the final four minutes to put the Mustangs within one with 1:13 left to play.
Free throws down the stretch, however, gave Adams State the victory.
Audra Major (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School, Midland Community College) led the Mustangs with 17 points. Davis followed with 16 points. Each also recorded six rebounds.
As a team, WNMU shot 36.7 percent from the floor. Adams State shot slightly better with 37.5 percent.
The Grizzlies' Bustos finished with 32 points and eight rebounds.
