Down to the Wire...Again!

For the third straight game, it came down to the final minute. WNMU called a timeout with 40 seconds left and the score tied at 87. With the ball in and the shot clock winding down, it didn't seem as though the play head coach Mark Coleman drew up was going as planned. Or did it? Scrambling, senior Steve Berrelleza (Phoenix, AZ, Mountain Pointe High School, Scottsdale Community College) drained a jumper from just inside the three-point line with only six seconds left on the shot clock. The Mustangs were up by two. There was still plenty of time, though, for Fort Lewis to win the game.

“I thought it was going in,” says Coleman. Fort Lewis' Trent Bowman launched a three with three seconds left. It came up short, and WNMU's Devin Stewart (Tucson, AZ, Santa Rita High School, Saddleback Junior College) nabbed the defensive rebound. The Mustangs finally snapped their nine-game losing streak. The Mustangs won, 89-87.

Five Mustangs scored double digits. Leading the way was DJ Nicholas (Glendale, AZ, Glendale High School) with 16 points and ten rebounds. The junior also recorded two blocks, three assists, and four steals. Berrelleza finished the night with 13 points.

Coming off the bench, Andy Sohlich (Battle Creek, MI, St. Phillip Catholic Central High School, Western Texas Community College; Eldon Academy Prep) posted 12 points in just eight minutes of play. He went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and 2-4 from three-point land.

Fort Lewis' DeAndre Lansdowne led all scorers with 30 points, nailing 12-of-18 shots from the floor.

The Mustangs will close out their 2008-2009 season on Saturday versus Adams State College.
