The Mustangs got off to a slow start Saturday Night. Western State College jumped out to a 23-2 lead to start the game. Slowly the Mustangs battled back to bring the game within 12 points at halftime (44-32), but the damage was already done. Western State defeated Western New Mexico, 85-77 in Gunnison, Colorado.
Western State improves to 13-10 overall (10-5 RMAC), while the Mustangs fall to 8-15 overall (4-11 RMAC).
Western State outmatched WNMU in nearly every category. The Mountaineers shot 48 percent from the floor and 44 percent from the three, while the Mustangs shot 38 percent from the field and 18 percent from behind the arc. Western State also out rebounded WMNU, 50-38.
The Mustangs were led by
DJ Nicholas (Glendale, AZ, Glendale High School), who posted a double-double after an 18-point and 12-rebound performance.
JJ Galberth (El Paso, TX, Parkland High School) finished the night with 14 points.
The Mountaineers had five players in double figures. Leading Western State was senior Justin Avalos with 22 points.
