The Mustangs continued their struggles on Tuesday evening as the University of Texas – El Paso Miners ran away with a 73-56 win in El Paso. WNMU is now 0-6 on the season; whereas, the Miners improve to 5-2.
The Miners had the lead the entire game, but the Mustangs hung with the Division I program for the first six minutes before UTEP went on an 11-0. The Miners had the double digit lead and held that distance for the reminder of the game.
WNMU was down by as many as 27 in the second half, but the Mustangs did not quit. The purple and gold cut the lead to just 13 (67-54) over a four-minute period when
Shatwa Morris (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) contributed all five of her points in the short amount of time.
The Mustangs were out-muscled in the paint and from the bench. UTEP outscored WNMU, 34-12, in the paint and had the huge 55-16 advantage from their bench.
WNMU shot better from three-point land, 8 of 25 for 32.0 percent, than two-point tries, 9 of 31 for 29.0 percent.
Krystal Davis (Fort Worth, TX, North Crowley High School, South Plains Junior College) did most of the damage, pacing her squad with 14 points.
Senior
Ashley Vigil (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) led the team on the boards with seven rebounds.
Miners' junior Ashley Milian poured in a career-high 24 points off the bench to lead UTEP.
