Western New Mexico was poised to get their second RMAC win of the young season, but visiting Colorado Christian exploited WNMU's weak inside defense to sneak by the Mustangs, 65-62, Saturday night in Silver City. The Mustangs slipped to 1-8 for the season and 1-3 in conference play.
WNMU played a solid first half, shooting 44 percent from the floor, including 3 of 7 from beyond the arc to carry a 34-30 lead into the locker room, but their shooting cooled off a bit in the second half as the Cougars worked the ball inside with a patient game that wore the hosts down. To hinder things further for the locals, WNMU shot just 59 percent from the free throw line in 22 attempts.
WNMU led until the 6:00 mark before surrendering the lead for good.
The Mustangs were led by senior
Audra Major's (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School, Midland Community College)19-point effort while
Krystal Davis (Fort Worth, TX, North Crowley High School, South Plains Junior College) chipped in 10. David recorded a double-double as she pulled 11 rebounds.
Colorado Christian (5-5, 3-0 RMAC) was led by Juanese Cornell's 24-point night. Abby Rosenthal also sizzled in Silver, adding 19 points to the Cougar tally. Both players also recorded double-doubles with Cornell taking 15 rebounds down and Rosenthal nabbing 12, nine of which were offensive boards.
