Second Chance Points Hurt Mustangs

At the Grand Canyon University Crowne Plaza Thanksgiving Classic Friday, the Mustangs gave the host their second win of the season and their second win over WNMU. GCU beat the Mustangs, 70-52. The Mustangs continue to search for their first win of the season.

WNMU played catch-up the entire game and had difficulty keeping the Antelopes off the boards. At half, the Antelopes led 33-16 and produced 15 second chance points. Grand Canyon recorded 23 offensive rebounds in the game and outrebound the Mustangs overall, 49-38.

WNMU could not cut into the double-digit GCU lead in the second half despite shooting better than GCU. The Mustangs shot 43 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Antelopes registered 37 percent. The Mustangs finished the game draining 35 percent of their shots.

WNMU newcomer Lonnie Sanchez (Scottsdale, AZ, St. Mary's High School, Central Arizona College) led the Mustangs offensively with 13 points. She was followed by Audra Major (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School, Midland Community College) who had 10 points.

Senior Ashley Vigil (Albuquerque, NM, Sandia High School) dished out six assists and notched three steals to go along with her six points.

GCU junior Samantha Murphy had 23 points, six assists, and four steals.

In the early game, Bemidji State defeated Western State, 61-57. At 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Bemidji State (3-1) plays Western New Mexico.
