Pioneers Run Away With WIn

The Mustangs were even with the Texas Woman's University Pioneers for the first 10 minutes of the second game of the day at the 2009 DFW Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premier but then got held up by strong second half shooting by the Pioneers. TWU got their second win of the season with a 20-point victory over the Mustangs, 73-53.

The Mustangs got their second loss of the season.

TWU scored the first six points before missing eight straight field goals. This allowed the Mustangs to gain their first and only lead of the game at the 12:54 mark of the first half. WNMU was quieted by the Pioneers the remainder of the half. The Pioneers outscored Western New Mexico, 26-8, in the final 11 minutes to a take a 17-point lead into the locker room.

The Mustangs were held to just 25.9 percent shooting in the first half while committing 17 turnovers.

WNMU saw the gap widen in the second half as TWU built a 33-point lead before settling at 73-53. The Pioneers shot 42.4 percent from the floor in the second half.

Coming off of the bench and in front of their family and friends, Texas-natives Dana Alexander (Fort Worth, TX, Arlington Heights High School, Kilgore College; East Texas Baptist University) and Krystal Davis (Fort Worth, TX, North Crowley High School, South Plains Junior College) led the Mustangs in scoring with 10 points. Alexander also grabbed seven rebounds, four on the offensive end.

WNMU finished the night with 26 turnovers and 32.2 field goal percentage. The Mustangs also struggled from the free throw line. They converted on only 11 of 21 attempts.

Western New Mexico will face Tarleton State tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. to conclude the tournament. Pitt State fell to Tarleton State, 75-46, in game one on Friday.
