The Metro State Roadrunners showed why they are ranked No. 18 in the country. The Roadrunners cruised past WNMU (25-11, 25-22, 25-20) Friday evening in Denver, Colorado. The win improved the Roadrunners to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mustangs fell to 8-8 overall and 6-2 in the RMAC.
Metro State hit .286 (43-15-98) for the night and held WNMU to just .135 (29-17-89). The Mustangs could not get by the tough block the Roadrunners put up. They roofed WNMU six times. WNMU also struggled passing the killer Roadrunner serves. Metro State posted nine aces.
The Mustangs found themselves down early in the first set when Metro State went on an 8-0 run to jump ahead, 11-3. Metro State still led at 16-7 and then ran off six more points in a row to lead, 22-7. The home team finished the set with an ace. WNMU hit a poor -.045 in the first set.
The second set was much more even. Ahead 13-11, WNMU saw their lead diminish as the Roadrunners tacked on four consecutive points. This shifted the momentum once again to Metro State despite the Mustangs hitting much better (.237, 15-6-38).
WNMU found themselves down once again in the third set after three attacking errors in the first five points, but the Mustangs bounced back with six points in a row to take a 6-5 lead. With the Mustangs up by two, 17-15, Metro State strung together a 4-0 run. They clung to that two-point advantage until 22-20 and then finished the match with three straight points.
Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) was the lone Mustang to produce double-digit kills. She had ten kills on 31 attempts. Freshman
Heather Rux (Cottonwood, AZ, Mingus Union High School) followed with nine kills. She had only one hitting error on the night.
Senior setter
Ellen East (Pomerene, AZ, Benson High School, Yavapai Community College) had her second lowest assist number of the season. She handed out 17, but she made up for it in the blocking category. She had four block assists.
