On Tuesday evening, the Mustang volleyball team will honor their lone senior,
Ellen East (Pomerene, AZ, Benson High School, Yavapai Community College), at the last home volleyball game of the season. The Mustangs will take on conference rivals New Mexico Highlands University.
East, originally from Pomerene, Arizona, came to Western New Mexico after playing one season at Yavapai Community College. Head coach
Jim Callender has played East in nearly every position since her arrival in 2007.
East has played in 260 out of 294 sets and 73 out of 80 matches the past three years. This past season East has had her best collegiate performance. She averages 8.33 assists per set to lead the team, 2.67 digs per set good for second on the team, nearly one kill per set, and over ½ blocks per set. She also has posted 22 service aces this year to tie with teammate
Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School) for the lead.
At the beginning of the season, East was named to the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Classic All-Tournament Team. She also was named the WNMU Student-Athlete of the Month in September.
Over her three years in the purple and gold jersey, East has recorded 154 kills, 1238 assists, 48 service aces, 565 digs, and 63 blocks.
The 5-6 senior will graduate in May with a degree in business.
