The Mustangs dropped their second match in a row Friday night (22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25). Down two sets to one, WNMU could not surpass the visiting Colorado School of Mines in set four and fell 25-22. WNMU is now 9-11 overall and 7-5 in RMAC play. The Orediggers improve to 17-5 overall and 9-3 in conference.
WNMU trailed nearly the entire first set, but freshman
Christine Pina (Glendora, CA, Glendora High School) put the Mustangs back in the hunt when she rattled off eight serves to tie the game at 20. Things were knotted again at 22, but the Orediggers posted three consecutive kills to win the first set.
Mines took the second set handedly as WNMU had a difficult time returning serves. With the score at 5-4 Mines, Mines' Elizabeth Serra-Hsu served three service aces in a row. The Mustangs were never able to recover.
In a close third set, both teams made their fare share of errors, but the Mustangs had two less as they took the set, 25-23.
It looked like the Mustangs were going to force a fifth and final set as they were up 17-11 midway through the fourth set. Once again, however, Mines' Serra Hsu rallied her team back into the game and tied things up at 18. Strong killing by the Orediggers finished the match.
Finding a new home on the left side,
Jovan Falemalu (Laie, HI, Kahuku High School) made the necessary adjustments and finished the night with a match-high 16 kills. Junior
Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) followed with 15 of her own.
Dishing out the majority of the WNMU assists was
Ellen East (Pomerene, AZ, Benson High School, Yavapai Community College). She had 41 assists. She also led the team in digs with 10.
Leading Mines was Serra Hsu who had 14 kills, 16 digs, and three service aces.
