Defense Cannot Hold Up

Senior Dennis Havrilla
The Mustang defense held strong for the first 15 minutes of the game as they earned their first defensive touchdown of the season Saturday afternoon but struggled in the second quarter as Chadron State College pounded the ball into the end zone three separate times to take the commanding lead. In the end, WNMU fell by a score of 42-7 as the Mustang offense could not produce any scoring of their own during the game. The Mustangs are now 1-5 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

On their opening drive, the Eagles went 80 yards in six plays to post the first touchdown of the game. Sophomore Maurice Threatts rushed the last two plays and was credited with the touchdown. Threatts finished the day with 80 yards on 14 carries.

WNMU ran three plays on the next drive and were forced to punt immediately, but WNMU linebacker Buster Thede (Arvada, CO, Pomona High School) quickly helped out the Mustangs. Thede intercepted a Garrett Treffer pass on the CSC 49-yard line and marched it into the end zone to tie the game. That was the only score the Mustangs mustered up the remainder of the game.

Later in the first quarter, the Eagles earned great field positioning after a Dennis Havrilla (North Concord, CA, Mt. Diablo High School, University of Nebraska - Kearney) pass was intercepted. Chadron State tacked on seven points just before the conclusion of the quarter. A combination of rushes from mark Haag and Threatts put the score at 14-7.

In the second quarter, the Eagles delivered three touchdowns. The first was marked as a rushing touchdown. The second was a four-yard touchdown pass. The final one of the half was a Havrilla interception return touchdown.

WNMU kicker Colin Lund (Mililani, HI, Mililani High School, New Mexico State University) posted a 67-yard kick coming out of halftime, but the WNMU special teams unit could not prevent Chadron's Threatts from returning it 57 yards. This led to a four-yard rush into the end zone for another seven points.

The Mustangs could not do much after that because they could not get the ball back. In the final 15 minutes, Chadron State maintained possession for 13 of them.

Havrilla went 16 for 27 on the day for 126 yards and threw three interceptions. Overall, the Mustangs only produced 204 yards on offense.

Defensively, Derrick Perrault (San Diego, CA, Helix High School, Grossmont College) led all tacklers with 13. He recorded six solo and seven assisted. Cooper Bowman (Los Lunas, NM, Los Lunas High School, University of New Mexico) followed with 11 total tackles.
