At the Kachina Classic, hosted by New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, Paul Gonzales (West Covina, CA) and Amy Roybal (Pojoaque Valley, NM/Pojoaque Valley High School) (Pojoaque Valley, NM) came across first for the Mustangs for the second meet in a row. No official team scores were kept.
Roybal ran a nearly identical race to the one she competed in two weeks ago. At UNM, Roybal clocked a time of 21:43.28 in the 5000-meter race, good for 30th. On Saturday, she came in with a time of 21:59.1 and another 30th place.
Twenty-one seconds later Cassandra Sanchez (Acoma Pueblo, NM/Laguna Acoma High School) (Acoma Pueblo, NM) crossed the finish line for the Mustangs. Chelsea Nelson (Grants, NM/Grants High School) (Grants, NM) finished 35th and a time of 22:28.3.
Gonzales came in 12th on the men's side, his best of the season so far. He finished the 5K race in 17:03.0. Freshman Donavan Jackson (Gallup, NM) was the next Mustang to come across. He recorded a time of 18:42.6 and 52nd place. Wilton Atkins (Wanganui, New Zealand) and Dustin Padilla (Santa Clara, NM) followed right behind for 54th and 56th place respectively.
Both the men and the women travel to the University of California – Riverside next weekend.
