WNMU split on Thursday afternoon at the Schutt Sports/Division II Lead-Off Classic in Phoenix, Arizona. They captured their second win of the season over Notre Dame de Namur University, 3-2, but lost to San Francisco State University, 8-0, in six innings. The Mustangs are now 2-4 overall.
In the first game of the tournament, pitcher Brianne Grommon (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View High School) (Mesa, AZ) gave up a single and a double to NDNU to drive in one runner. But WNMU answered in the third inning after senior Cory Usher (Monterey, CA/Monterey High School) (Monterey, CA) homered, sending fellow senior Valerie Villela (Chandler, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) (Chandler, AZ) home after a double of her own.
The Mustangs tacked on another run in the sixth inning. Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ/Coronado High School) (Scottsdale, AZ) singled, which brought Antoinette Estrella (Glendale, AZ/Apollo High School) (Glendale, AZ) across the plate. Estrella got on base with a single.
NDNU tried to rally back in the seventh after two hits and one run, but it wasn't good enough.
Villela finished with two hits off of three at bats. Catcher Kaci Lewis (Olympia, WA/Olympia High School) (Olympia, WA) posted 11 putouts. Estrella had six.
Pitcher Grommon allowed seven hits and registered ten strikeouts. She is now 1-2 on the season.
In the San Francisco State University loss, the Mustangs hung with SFSU through the first three innings. But in the fourth inning, SFSU tallied five hits, forced two WNMU errors, and drove in six runs. SFSU posted two more runs in the sixth. This time it was off of one hit and two WNMU errors.
Overall, the Mustangs only connected on two pitches, but recorded four errors.
Pitcher Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X High School) (Albuquerque, NM) recorded the loss (1-2).
