It came down to the wire at Ben Altamirano Field Saturday. The Mustangs were down by seven with just over three minutes to play, and WNMU needed to march the length of the field for a touchdown. With Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) (Albuquerque, NM) at the helm, the team got to the visitor-10 with 1:10 remaining. The Mustangs then got to the five-yard line and a first and goal after a costly Adams State College penalty, but it still wasn't close enough to find the endzone. The Mustangs lost 28-21. The Grizzlies got their first win of the season while the Mustangs remain winless at 0-5.
It was a quick-scoring first quarter as both teams got on the board on their opening drive. Adams State was the first to do so with a 16-yard pass complete to Josh Salazar. Two minutes later Cody House (Tucson, AZ/Cholla HS) (Tucson, AZ) connected with Scotty Crespin (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School) (Socorro, NM) for 60 yards and the touchdown. Crespin's reception was the longest catch of the day.
It didn't take long for the Grizzlies to take the lead again as quarterback Stephen Baca posted his second touchdown of the day with 5:40 left in the first. This time he found Brady Rohlwing for seven yards.
The Mustangs second touchdown came at the top of the second quarter thanks to senior Darryl Horne (Mesa, AZ/Dobson High School) (Mesa, AZ). Horned intercepted Baca's pass at the ASC seven-yard line and then returned it for six yards to put them just shy of the goal line. Milt Cherry (Aurora, CO/Eagle Crest High School) (Aurora, CO) ran it in for the one-yard touchdown.
At the end of the first half, the Mustangs were down 20-14 because of a great foot by ASC's Dustin Bolt, who hit a 25- and 36-yard field goal.
Things remained quiet in the third period, but Mustang fans got loud in the middle of the fourth after an ASC blocked punt put the home team into great field position. Two plays later Tramell McGill (Phoenix, AZ/Hamilton High School) (Phoenix, AZ) then ran it in for the six-yard touchdown to put the Mustangs up by one, 21-20.
ASC quieted the Mustang crowd quickly, though, as they turned around for another touchdown to eventually end the scoring and the game.
Voller finished the day throwing 10-28, good for 84 yards. Overall the Mustangs were held to 204 yards offensively in the game.
Defensively, Horne finished with a game-high 15 tackles, eight of them being solo. Eric Camarillo (Signal Hill, CA/Mayfair High School) posted nine tackles with one tackle for a loss of 16 yards.
