For the second straight game, Western New Mexico's played a near flawless first half of basketball just to see it fade away in the final stanza Saturday night as they fell 76-68 to Colorado Christian in RMAC action in Silver City. The heartbreaking loss keeps WNMU winless at 0-14 (0-7 RMAC).
The Mustangs took a 34-30 lead into the locker room but poor shooting and turnovers early in the second half spelled their doom as CCU took control of the game in the opening minutes of the second half.
Again, chilly shooting from the field cost WNMU as they managed just 39% while watching the Cougars make more than half of their shots. CCU was strong on the boards as well, sweeping the glass 10 more times than WNMU, 39-29.
WNMU's Whitney Lewis (Marana, AZ/Marana High School) (Marana, AZ) turned in a solid performance with a 20-point outing while Jocelyn Chavez (Belen, AZ) and Ashley Vigil (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia High School) (Albuquerque, NM) recorded 14 and 12 points respectively.
The Mustangs watched CCU's Silver City native Talmai Aguirre light up Drag's Court with a 26-point effort in her return to Grant County.
The Lady 'Stangs will now set their sights on next week's CSU-Pueblo matchup on Thursday. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
