Mustangs Handle Lopers, Post 8-1 RMAC Softball Win

SILVER CITY, NM — In a single game at Mustang Stadium late Saturday afternoon, the WNMU softball team tallied another victory, beating the University of Nebraska – Kearney Lopers, 8-1.

The Mustangs improve to 21-14 overall and 18-8 in the RMAC. Nebraska – Kearney falls to 19-11 overall and 15-9 in the conference.

The two teams meet again tomorrow in a tripleheader. The first game begins at 11:00 a.m. with the final game starting at 3:00 p.m.

Western jumped into in early 2-0 lead on Saturday off of a double by Debbie Yescas (Sahuarita, AZ), which then brought Meredith Drahota (Phoenix, AZ) and Cassidi Caringi (Phoenix, AZ) home.

Pitcher Breanne Grommon (13-7) forced the Lopers to sit down quickly, forcing six straight outs in the second and third inning.

The Mustangs got their bats swinging in the bottom of the third, which eventually forced a Loper pitching change. WNMU had six hits and five runs in the one inning. First, Drahota started things off with a homerun over centerfield. Yescas repeated her first inning performance, hitting a double and sending in two runners.

With Emily Robinson (Pleasant Hill, CA) at the plate, Yescas on second, and a new pitcher, Robinson hit a double of her own, sending Yescas home. Robinson eventually marked a run on the scoreboard with a Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ) single.

Nebraska – Kearney tried to get a rally going in the sixth with a standing triple, which scored, and a standing double, but it was too late.

WNMU tallied 13 hits on 31 at-bats to Kearney's six hits. Grommon improved her season record throwing the pitches to 13-7.

The Mustangs play a rare tripleheader Sunday, again battling Nebraska – Kearney, with the first games scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
