WNMU Football Player Killed in Drive-by Shooting

Silver City, NM -- Western New Mexico University football player Nicholas (Nick) Arnold was killed in a tragic drive-by shooting incident early Sunday morning in Tucson, AZ.

Arnold, 20, from Sunnydale, CA, teammate Miguel Sandoval (Tucson, AZ/), 21, from Tucson, and another WNMU student were in Tucson over the weekend visiting friends when an unidentified car approached them outside a fast-food restaurant at approximately 3:30am Sunday morning. Sandoval was also shot, and is listed in good condition at a Tucson hospital. The other WNMU student, 19-year-old Manuel Silva, was not injured.

The shooters have yet to be apprehended by Tucson police.

"I grieve over the loss of Nick Arnold (Sunnyvale, CA/) and behalf of the entire WNMU community, I express both profound sadness over this death and extend my deepest sympathy to his family and friends," said Dr. John E. Counts, President of the University.

A memorial service is scheduled for 8:30pm, Tuesday, February 8 at Silver City's Church of the Good Shepard.
