Tanya Rivers

Tanya Rivers is in her fourth year as the Faculty Athletic Representative for WNMU Athletics and is a professor in the math department.

Rivers played basketball at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, while earning a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Rivers was a shooting guard, who walked onto the team in 1995, where she earned the respect amongst her peers, being named captain for two years.

After her first stint in college, Tanya decided to take some time to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. Joining AmeriCorps, a national service organization, Tanya had the opportunity to tutor math and science students at a community college in upstate New York. This experience ignited a passion for teaching.

After two years of service, she returned to college as a student in the math department at Western Washington University. There she earned a degree in mathematics and, more importantly, gained valuable experience as a math educator working with great mentors and role models.

Rivers has been teaching at the collegiate level since 2001, preferring always to live in small college towns such as, Silver City. Tanya and her family moved to Silver City in the fall of 2013 when she accepted a position in the math department at WNMU.

Rivers has become an active member of the Silver City community having served on the Board of Directors for Bike Works and the Board of Directors for Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services. Staying active, the Rivers family rides their bikes together around town together. On campus Rivers likes to play pick-up basketball in the IM gym getting in a game in between classes
