Alex Hunt enters his third year with Mustangs. Director of Athletics,
Scott Noble hired Hunt in March of 2020, after a year of being a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Hardin-Simmons University.
During his time as a player at HSU, Hunt was full of accolades. In 2016, Hunt was named American Southwest Conference (ASC) Freshman of the Year and Most Valuable Player. Hunt would again earn the ASC Most Valuable Player award, along with the ASC Sportsmanship Player of the Year award, during his senior season in 2019. During his four-year playing career, he was a three-time First-Team All-ASC selection at number one singles and number one doubles. Hunt would go on to be a three-time ASC Doubles Champion, two-time ASC Singles Champion, and two-time ITA Singles Semifinalist. Hunt’s highest national ranking came at #48 in the country in 2017-2018.
Hunt was also stellar in the classroom as he was a 2019 ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor Recipient and would go on to graduate with his Social Studies Composite (Education) degree in May 2019. Hunt then went on to earn his master's degree in May of 2021 in Kinesiology & Sports Recreation Management.
In Hunt's first year at the helm of the WNMU men's and women's tennis program (2020-2021), the men's team had a 2-17 record and the women had a 5-16 record. Both teams struggled to maintain a healthy roster with just 6 players on each team. The program quickly turned around, especially the men's team, during Hunt's second year coaching the teams (2021-2022). The men's team ended the regular season with an 11-9 record, solidifying their highest ever seed in the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament. The women finished with a 6-15 record with a young squad.
Over the course of his first two years here, Hunt and his program have earned many awards. On the men's side, Jonathan Vega was awarded LSC second team singles his freshman year (2020-2021) playing number one singles all year long. Jonathan Vega was awarded LSC first team singles his sophomore year (2021-2022) playing number one singles all year long and LSC first team doubles with freshman partner Javier Romero playing number one doubles all year long. During Vega's sophomore campaign (2021-2022), he was also awarded LSC Sportsmanship Player of the Year. On the women's side, Julia Tozzi and Camila Gomez earned LSC honorable mention in doubles during the 2020-2021 season. With such an huge improvement in the program from 2020-2021 season to the 2021-2022 season, Hunt was named the 2022 LSC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year at the age of 25 years old.
The Odessa, TX, native is happily married to his wife Megan. Alex and Megan welcomed their son Johnny Brooks Hunt into the world on March 12, 2022. The growing family also has a dog named Kevin. In his free time, Hunt enjoys reading, especially historical biographies. Ron Chernow, Jon Meacham, Doris Kearns-Goodwin, and Andrew Roberts are his favorite authors. Coach Hunt credits his family for pushing him and supporting his dreams throughout his life, giving him every opportunity they could to give him a chance to compete and grow in the sport of tennis. Hunt thanks his parents Mark and Melissa Hunt, his two brothers Austin and Aaron, and his grandparents Cathy and Johnny.
