Micaela Medina

Coach Medina returns to Silver City with a wealth of coaching experience and a deep-rooted passion for the game. She most recently served as the head coach at Valencia High School in Los Lunas, New Mexico, where she led the Jaguars for five seasons. During her tenure, she guided the program to two appearances in the quarterfinals of the New Mexico State Basketball Tournament, establishing Valencia as a competitive force in the state.

Before her time at Valencia, Coach Medina spent two seasons as the head coach at Cobre High School in Bayard, New Mexico. There, she made a significant impact by leading the team to its first state tournament appearance in over a decade—revitalizing the program and inspiring the community.

Coach Medina's coaching roots trace back to Western New Mexico University, where she served as a student assistant under Coach Rusty Kennedy from 2012 to 2015. That period marked the most successful season in recent program history, and her contributions played a vital role in the team's success.

As a player, Coach Medina was a member of the WNMU Lady Mustangs during the 2009–2010 season, appearing in 15 games. Prior to her collegiate career, she enjoyed a standout run at the high school level, earning numerous accolades including:

  • Sophomore Year: All-Academic Team, First Team All-District

  • Junior Year: All-Academic Team, First Team All-District, Second Team All-Metro, Team High Scoring Award

  • Senior Year: All-Academic Team, First Team All-District, Second Team All-Metro, Second Team All-State, McDonald's All-American Nominee, Albuquerque Public Schools Athlete of the Year, State Farm Insurance Player of the Week, Top 5% of Graduating Class, North/South All-Star Game participant, Metro All-Star Game participant

Following her playing days, she began her coaching career as a varsity assistant at Del Norte High School, where she helped lead the program to a District Championship and a No. 6 seed in the State Tournament.

Coach Medina’s return to Silver City marks a full-circle moment in her basketball journey. With a proven track record of building programs and developing student-athletes on and off the court, she is committed to continuing the tradition of excellence.
