Nick Garrett is in his first season with the WNMU football coaching staff. Garrett will be working as the Passing Game Coordinator and QB Coach for the Mustangs.
Prior to arriving at Western New Mexico, Garrett was the Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach at East Los Angeles Junior College in California for four seasons (2009-12). During his time with the Huskies, Garrett guided the offense to the top of the state and national rankings. These accomplishments included a 2012 offense that ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 3 nationally in total offense (5,243 yards) and touchdowns (58 TDs). In 2012, the ELAC offensive passing game was No. 1 in the state and nationally. He also recruited and developed 15 1 Team All-Americans including but not limited to a two-time First-Team All-State/All-American unanimous QB and Top Passer in the Nation, Aaron Cantu. In 2009-2011, Garrett coached the No. 1 Wide Receiver in the country, Anthony Denham (UTAH) and Carlos Lozano (UTAH).
Garrett worked with the Hueneme High school coaching staff as the AHC/OC/DC coach in 2007. During his one year, he helped turn a prior season of (1-9) into a quick change of (6-4). While Garrett was with the Vikings, he mentored and developed First-Team All-State FS Trevaun Nixon, who he continued to mentor and direct over to UTEP were he was a First- Team All-Conference selection as a CB.
Prior to his appointment at Hueneme, Garrett was an assistant coach in charge of passing game, quarterbacks, wide-receivers, video coordinating and strength and conditioning at Kansas Wesleyan University for two years (2005-07). During his two years at KWU, he coached a trio of KCAC First-Team All-Conference players QB's Junior Alexis/Justin Schropp and Wide Receiver two-time selection Marcus Lowe.
Garrett began his coaching career at Graceland University in 2004 where he was the Running Backs Coach and the Junior Varsity Offensive Coordinator. Garrett helped to develop First-Team HAAC Running Back Julius Strong.
Garrett also has experience as a mentor and youth developmental instructor with organizations such as YAC Foundation/Speed Right Foundation/North Star Sports/Boys and Girls Club of America/East La Bobcat Association and the YMCA.
As a player, Garrett earned a varsity letter at Ventura College as a Wide Receiver and was a one-year varsity letter recipient at Graceland University.
Garrett has a daughter by the name of Jayleen Alexandra Garrett, and a brother, Brendan Garrett, who is the Assistant Basketball Coach at Cal-Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
