SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico University Head Volleyball Coach
Geno Frugoli announced the signing of two future Mustangs on Wednesday, kicking off the National Signing Period. Kicking of the class of 2026, the Mustangs welcome Payton Zenan and Briseis Armendariz.
"I can't think of a better way to start our 2026 recruiting class than with these two young ladies" Frugoli said. "Both have a strong desire to be here and we're excited to get them in the gym."
Payton Zenan is a 5'9" outside hitter who plays for Zona Volleyball Club and Sahuarita High School in Sahuarita, AZ. Zenan has guided her team to three consecutive State 4A Playoff appearances. Zenan is well decorated with accolades as she was named 2
nd Team All-Conference in State 4A, 1
st Team All-Region (4A Gila) for three consecutive years and Sports360AZ All-Academic Girls Volleyball for 4A-6A.
An accomplished club player, her Zona club team finished 5
th at the 2025 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships and placed 3
rd in the Las Vegas Classic.
Academically, Payton is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Body Vice President as a Senior and a member of the Honor Roll. In her spare time, she's involved with her church's youth group, youth ministry and is active in her school's Student Government.
Payton intends to study Chemistry and pursue a career in Pharmaceutical Sales. She chose WNMU because of her relationship with Coach Frugoli, the campus' proximity to home, as well as the mountains.
"Payton showed tremendous interest and came to both our camps. She demonstrated she can be a quality player in our conference and can fill a number of different roles for us. That versatility is another reason we're excited Payton chose to become a Mustang!" said Frugoli.
Briseis Armendariz is a 5'1" libero who plays for Sun City Volleyball Club and Del Valle High School in El Paso, Texas. Armendariz has led her team to three consecutive 2-5A Bi-District Championships. Amassed 724 digs this season and has 1,548 for her career, she is currently she's ranked 37
th in the nation in digs, 21
st in Texas, 6
th in Region I, 19
th in Division I and in Division II, 1
st in 5A Region I District 2, 18
th in the Texas University Interscholastic League and 19
th in the Texas High School Coaches Association. Armendariz was named MVP for all of Distric 2-5A, a PREP1athlete, 1
st Team All-District 2-5A and has been on the
El Paso Times "20 El Paso High School Volleyball Players to Watch' the last two years.
A decorated club player, her Texas Storm team finished 5
th at the 2025 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships, took 3
rd at the Windy City National Qualifier in Chicago and placed 1
st in the Last Vegas Classic.
Academically, Armendariz is in the top 10% of her class, is on the Honor Roll and was named 'Outstanding Sports Medicine Student'. She intends to study Cell and Molecular Biology at WNMU, with the intention of becoming either a Lab Scientist or Physician's Assistant. When asked why she chose WNMU, she said, "I picked WNMU because the team of girls shared a bond that was very strong and welcoming. From the first camp I participated in, the girls were so quick to make me feel comfortable and included. They enjoy each other's company and the whole team is close, which is a good environment that I would love to be a part of and build long-lasting friendships. I also connected well with the coaches and felt that I could make an impact on the team after coming down to visit!" In addition, she said, "The campus is very beautiful and close to my home town, which makes it easier for my parents and family to go watch my games and be a part of my collegiate sport experience. Furthermore, they offer great programs for the majors I'm considering."
When asked about Armendariz, Frugoli said, "Bri is extremely quick and has a great attitude. She should help support our defensive efforts. We're excited Bri chose to become a Mustang!"
