SILVER CITY, N.M. – After searching high and wide, Western New Mexico University Head Volleyball Coach
Geno Frugoli has named Jen Whetten as his next assistant coach. Whetten, a native of Sliver City, returns after serving as the volleyball strength coach at Pima Community College.
"I'm very excited to welcome Coach Whetten to our volleyball and WNMU family," said Head Coach
Geno Frugoli. "Jennifer's passion and experience will really help us moving forward. Since she graduated from WNMU, I know she will work tirelessly and with great pride to making our team successful. Her positive personality, attention to detail, and discipline in all that she does really stood out from the other candidates."
Prior to Pima CC, Whetten worked as the strength coach, boys basketball coach and volleyball coach for Rio Rico High School for two seasons (2022-24). She also made a stop at Walden Grove High School from 2014 to 2022, where she was also the strength coach, boys basketball coach and volleyball coach. In 2018 and 2019, Whetten won Arizona Volleyball Region Coach of the Year.
"I'm excited to be back in my hometown and look forward to helping the volleyball program rise in the Lone Star Conference," said Whetten.
Whetten also brings experience of playing at the collegiate level, as she played for The University of Denver. In 2003 she was named the Colorado Player of the Year. During the 2000 season she became a state champion at Silver High School.
She hopes to improve the mindset of our current athletes by building connections and challenging them to grow. Whetten has been apart of numerous community service initiatives such as hosting toy drives, visiting children's hospitals, cleaning up trash, etc. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, working out and spending time with family.
