Women's Basketball Cruises to Second Straight Victory

Kim Clark hit six three-pointers to lead WNMU with 18 points Monday.
Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – Behind four players in double-figures, the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team cruised to their second straight win, this time over the University of the Southwest, 89-59, Monday in non-conference action inside Drag's Court.

"Happy with the win there are always things you can point to that you need to fix and we are no exception to that," Second-year Head Coach Rusty Kennedy said. "This team continues to come together, as I see improvement every day. I am excited to see how good we can become if we can put it together before RMAC play. I thought everyone that played gave us positive contributions tonight."

It started early for WNMU (2-2) as they rolled up the first six points with baskets from Desiree Young (North Ogden, UT/Weber High School), Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) and RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School). The Lady Mustangs continued with the solid shooting with Kim Clark (Santee, CA/West Hills High School) hitting back-to-back three-pointers for a 23-12 lead at the 11:40 mark.
The lead reached 19 on a layup from Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) for a 40-21 lead with six minutes to go before the break.

USW (1-4) would counter with an 8-0 run, but the Lady Mustangs responded, pushing the lead as high as 20 on free throws from Newsome before holding a 51-33 lead at halftime. Of the 51 points, 32 came inside the paint and 20 on second-chance baskets.

Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) expanded the lead to 21 at 65-44 with her layup at the 13:10 mark.

Leala Longmire gave WNMU their largest lead of the game with two minutes to play with a layup for the 87-51 lead.

WNMU shot well throughout, connecting on 36-of-81 (44.4), and were 9-of-21 (42.9) from three. Clark led four Lady Mustangs in double-figures going for 18 points, as all of her points came on treys. Mitchell added 11, while Newsome and Tessa Jones (Truth or Consequences, NM/Hot Springs High School) scored 10 points apiece.

The Lady Mustangs held a 49-29 rebounding edge, 50- 22 points in the paint and 27-4 points off turnover advantage over the USW Mustangs.

WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Phoenix to play Division I Grand Canyon University in exhibition action Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
