Box Score ANCHORAGE, Alas. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team wrapped up their two-game trip in Alaska with a game against Alaska Anchorage dropping the game Saturday night, 85-56.
WNMU (0-2) took an early 4-2 lead on a layup by
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) two minutes in. Newsome would continue with the point-streak, as she added another layup a minute later to help put the Lady Mustangs back in front, 6-4.
WNMU would keep it close throughout the first half against the SeaWolves (1-0), as
Tessa Jones (Truth or Consequences, NM/Hot Springs High School) helped tie the game for the fifth time at 21-all with a pair of free throws and
Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) tied the game for the sixth and final time at the 7:17 mark when she hit a pair from the line to tie the game at 23.
Alaska Anchorage would outscore the Lady Mustangs 25-12 over the final seven minutes to take a 48-35 lead at halftime.
The SeaWolves opened with the first four points of the second half to go ahead by 17. The Lady Mustangs would get as close as 14 when
Kim Clark (Santee, CA/West Hills High School) hit a pair from the line at the 16 minute mark leaving Alaska Anchorage ahead, 54-40.
That would be as close as WNMU would get the rest of the way as the SeaWolves went on for the 85-56 victory.
Newsome again led the Lady Mustangs going for 11 points, along with five rebounds and two steals.
Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) and Gutierrez added 10 points apiece.
Veronica Celaya (Chandler, AZ/Williams Field High School) led the team in rebounds with nine.
WNMU will return to Silver City for their home opener this coming Saturday when they will play Sul Ross State inside Drag's Court at 4:30 p.m.
