It was a close one, but Western New Mexico's women's basketball team remained winless Friday as the University of Nebraska-Kearney surged past the Mustangs, 63-57, in Silver City in RMAC action. The loss was WNMU's 15th-straight while UNK improved to 7-7 (6-4 RMAC).
The Mustangs took a six-point lead to the halftime locker room, but the Lopers came out with a 6-0 run after the intermission to take WNMU's advantage away. Kearney led by as much as four early in the second stanza, but the Stangs continued to fight and stayed in the game for most of the second half. In fact, WNMU led 50-49 at the six-minute mark, and the game was tied with five minutes to go. The Mustangs' shooting went chilly after that.
The real knife in the back for the locals was going 0 of 5 from the free throw line in the second half and 3-of-12 overall. Kearney made 18 points from the line in 26 attempts.
The Lopers controlled the boards 45-33, and made 44 percent of the their attempts from the floor to WNMU's 33 percent night. The Mustangs did control their turnovers a bit better with 16 while forcing the visitors to 23.

Amanda Tucker (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield High School) and
Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA/La Costa Canyon High School) score 12 and 10 respectively.
