Silver City, NM -- WNMU Senior Tina Bickford (Butte, MT/Great Falls High School) (Butte, MT) and 2006 graduate Mike Wog found the going a bit tougher Tuesday than they did Monday, but advanced in their respective State Amateur golf championships. Bickford, who is playing in the New Mexico Women's Amateur, defeated seventh seed Susan Daniels. Wog struggled to a 76 to finish in 10th place after two days in the Arizona Men's Amateur.

The Women's Am is being played at Santa Fe Country Club while the Arizona event is contested at Tucson Country Club.

Bickford's match was a competitive one, with the gritty Daniels near the lead until Tina took command on 17 and 18 to win two up. Wednesday's match will see the battle of the two low scorers from the stroke play portion of the tournament as Bickford will meet University of Wyoming sophomore Jonelle Martinez in round two. The defending champion from last year's tournament, Lisa Kraxner, was the top seed. Kraxner defeated WNMU's Katharine Dorris in 2006 in sudden death. Dorris was a late withdrawal this year do to a heavy work load.

The Mustangs' Rebekah Berve (Farmington, NM/Piedra Vista High School) (Farmington, NM), who is playing in the first flight got a bye Tuesday.

Wog got off to horrendous a bogey, bogey, par, triple start Tuesday after shooting a 6-under-par 66 Monday to hold on to 10th place after steadying the ship on the inward nine. The top 64 players advance to match play portion of the Arizona Am out of the 144-man field. Wog was in second place heading into the second round, so he still get a relatively strong seed as the Match Play begins Wednesday.

Both Bickford and Wog will advance as long as they win their matches. The Women's event wraps up Thursday, while the Men's tournament concludes Saturday.
