SAN ANGELO, TX -- Western New Mexico's women's softball team came up short versus the St. Mary's Rattlers in NCAA Division II South Central Region first round action at the Angelo State University Softball Complex Thursday evening, dropping the game 4-1.
The Mustangs took the lead 1-0 after a single run in the fourth inning. Junior Cory Usher (Monterey, CA) singled down the right line and then moved to second on a sacrifice. Antoinette Estrella (Phoenix, AZ) then lined a single to left, allowing Usher to score.
Prior, St. Mary's Malissa Magee retired the first nine WNMU batters of the game before running into the Usher/Estrella trouble in the fourth.
St. Mary's didn't waste any time in responding in the bottom of the fourth. The Rattlers led off the bottom with a single to center followed by a double down the left field line to score one run.
One batter later St. Mary's smashed a double to the wall in center field to bring in one more run and take the 2-1 lead. With one more hit in the bottom of the fourth, St. Mary's took had the 3-1 advantage.
St. Mary's completed the scoring for the game in the fifth with a home run to left field. Rattlers' pitcher Magee retired the last ten WNMU batters of the game to complete the win.
WNMU fell to 35-19-1 and will face Angelo State University at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Angelo lost a heartbreaker in ten innings late Thursday versus Northeastern University.
